Allowing emotions — when it becomes a strategy

Many people try to allow their feelings — and notice that it does not actually make things easier.
Anxiety is still there, sadness remains, inner tension hardly changes.
It can begin to feel as though something is still not being done quite right.

At some point, many realize that fighting their feelings does not help much.
They stop trying to push anxiety away.
They no longer try to change sadness immediately.

This is indeed a different way of relating.
Quieter. Less directed against oneself.

And yet something often appears that is easy to overlook.
Even in the attempt to allow a feeling, a subtle orientation often remains:
that something should change as a result.

A feeling is present.
And at the same time, in the background, there is the question of whether it is becoming less.

Is it getting easier yet?

At that point, the focus shifts.
It is no longer only about the feeling itself,
but about whether it is being “allowed” in the right way — and whether it will then diminish.

“Allowing” becomes something that is supposed to work.
Something that can succeed or fail.

This can show up, for example, in someone sitting still and trying to let a feeling be there —
while inwardly checking again and again whether it has already become less.

Or in a quiet doubt that arises:
Am I doing this right?

The feeling is no longer simply there in itself.
It becomes the object of a kind of monitoring.

Here, the same movement appears as before:
that unpleasant experience is, in the end, still meant to be changed.

Only the open resistance recedes into the background.
In its place, a quieter form emerges:

No longer “this should not be here,”
but “it should change if I relate to it in the right way.”

Not because allowing is wrong.
But because something continues within it, unnoticed:
the attempt to change it.

And this can become visible in a moment.
Not as something one has consciously chosen,
but as something that has been there all along.

And in the moment it is seen, it is no longer quite the same.
It is no longer unnoticed.

The feeling is still there.
And at the same time, it becomes clear what has been happening in the background.

And that additional demand loses some of its weight, if only for a moment.
