Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy according to Milton Erickson
Hypnosis – a grounded method in psychotherapy
Hypnosis is used in psychotherapy to support processes of change on a deeper level.
It can be particularly helpful when certain patterns keep repeating or are difficult to change on a purely conscious level. Many of our responses arise outside of conscious awareness – they shape how we experience, how we act, and even how our bodies respond. Hypnotherapy offers a setting in which these processes can become more accessible and can be approached in a different way. It can help to activate inner resources and to develop new perspectives in dealing with psychological or psychosomatic challenges.
Sessions are guided by your individual concerns and are tailored accordingly.
What is Ericksonian hypnotherapy?
Ericksonian hypnotherapy was developed by Milton H. Erickson (1901–1980), and continues to shape modern hypnotherapy.
A central understanding is that trance is not something unusual. We are familiar with such states from everyday life – for example when we are absorbed in thought, fully engaged in something, or when the surroundings fade into the background. Hypnotherapy makes use of these natural states to initiate inner processes of change.
It is not about putting someone into a passive condition, but about bringing conscious and unconscious processes into contact with each other. Rather than relying on direct instructions, Ericksonian hypnotherapy works in an individual, often indirect and open way.
Key characteristics of Ericksonian hypnotherapy
Individual and resource-oriented
Each person brings abilities and experiences that can be helpful in the process – hypnotherapy supports access to these resources.
Working with natural trance states
Hypnosis is not a foreign condition, but a familiar part of our experience that can be used therapeutically.
Indirect suggestions instead of direct instructions
Ericksonian hypnotherapy works with metaphors, images, and questions to engage unconscious processes.
Connecting conscious and unconscious experience
Hypnosis does not mean loss of control – it often takes place with clear awareness and active inner participation.
Focus on self-efficacy
The aim is not only relief in the moment, but a more independent way of relating to inner processes – also beyond the sessions.
Distinction from Stage Hypnosis
Hypnosis is often associated with stage performances in which people appear to act without control.
Therapeutic hypnosis differs fundamentally from this.
It is based on willingness, autonomy, and a respectful approach.
Clients remain responsive and actively involved in the process at all times.
Typical Areas of Application
Hypnotherapy can be supportive in various areas, for example:
- anxiety and phobias
- inner conflicts or decision-making situations
- psychosomatic complaints
- stress, tension, or exhaustion
- self-esteem and personal development
- smoking cessation or behavioral change
Hypnotherapy – a calm yet effective approach
Ericksonian hypnotherapy is not a passive technique, but an active process in which inner processes can be perceived and gradually changed.
It can support access to unconscious resources and open up new ways of relating to inner experience.
If you are wondering whether hypnotherapy might be helpful for your concerns, this can be explored together in an initial consultation.

The Hypno-Systemic Approach
In my work, I combine Ericksonian hypnotherapy with the insights of systemic therapy.
This hypno-systemic approach has been significantly shaped by Dr. Gunther Schmidt, with whom I had the honour to work personally.
Your concerns are not viewed in isolation, but in the context of your life situation and relationships.
At the same time, attention is given to inner dynamics – different parts and perspectives that are active within you.
These inner “parts” can gradually come into a more constructive exchange, making new, coherent solutions possible.
